Project Overview

Arti Speech is an innovative augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app designed to improve communication for individuals with speech challenges. Arti offers a user-friendly, structured approach that simplifies expression and enhances clarity. Set to launch in early 2025, Arti Speech will be available for individuals and educational institutions in the UK.

Background

Arti is a continuation of my undergraduate thesis titled "How Can User Interface and Experience Design Aid the Development of Good Communication Through Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices?" During my undergraduate studies, I focused on:

Research

  • Conducted interviews with speech and language therapists and AAC coordinators, and performed ethnographic research by observing children's reactions to AAC interfaces in a school environment.

Prototyping

  • Developed low-fidelity prototypes using wireframes in Sketch & Adobe XD and high-fidelity interactive interfaces with HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery.

Design

  • Created a UI for a three-step communication process using grid layouts and squares for input.

User Testing

  • Analysed how prototypes were received by neurodiverse children, and gathered feedback through sessions with teachers at a special needs school in North London.

Solution

Arti Speech addresses communication barriers through a user-friendly app that employs a structured three-step communication approach:

Select the Subject

  • Choose who the conversation is directed towards.

Choose the Verb

  • Select an action or category, such as feelings or food.

Pick the Object

  • Complete the message with the final word or phrase.

Pizza symbol

This process simplifies communication, making it more accessible and effective.

Unique Selling Points

Progressive Web App

  • Fully responsive design for seamless mobile, tablet, and desktop use.
  • Built with React.js and React Native: Ensures a robust, high-performance platform experience.

Companion Native App

  • Provides additional functionality and integration for users.

SaaS Solution for Educational Institutions

  • Facilitates management of communication dashboards for pupils, with real-time updates.

Teacher and Parent/Carer Integration

  • Allows teachers to manage communication dashboards and parents/carers to access their own accounts, with changes automatically reflected on the non-verbal person's dashboard.

AI-Driven Sentence Enhancement

  • Utilises AI to add filler words and improve sentence structure, such as converting "I want toilet" to "I want to go to the toilet" for clearer communication.

Current Development Status

Arti Speech is currently under active development. The team is working to build and refine the app's features, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of usability and functionality. We are focused on integrating feedback from ongoing user testing and preparing for a launch in early 2025.

Design Process

Research and User Insights

  • Built upon insights gained from undergraduate research, including interviews and ethnographic studies.
  • Gathered feedback from therapists, educators, and users to understand their needs and pain points.

Wireframing and Prototyping

  • Created wireframes and interactive prototypes to test and refine the user experience.

User Testing

  • Conducted usability tests to ensure the app's functionality and accessibility.
  • Iterated on design based on feedback to enhance usability and effectiveness.

Final Design

  • Designed a clean, intuitive interface with easy navigation and clear visual cues.
  • Implemented accessible design principles to cater to diverse user needs.

Impact

Arti Speech aims to transform how individuals with communication difficulties interact with the world. By providing a tool that is both accessible and adaptable, the app empowers users to express themselves more effectively and confidently.

Looking Ahead

The official release of Arti Speech is scheduled for early 2025. We are excited to bring this solution to those who need it and to continue evolving the app based on user feedback and technological advancements.
