Pollution Powder is a data visualisation project which aims to expose individuals to the issue of air pollution in our world today. Pollution Powder takes a physical visualisation approach, showing pollutant data, such as nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone and particular matter through different coloured powder. Whilst the majority of air pollution is invisible, it may seem difficult for individuals to understand the effects it has on our health and our environment. Therefore I created this project to turn pollution, something usually intangible into something people can see. I have also overexaggerated the look of pollution in my visualisation as all pollutants are shown through powder. I have manifested my results in the form of a series of images as each image visualises the data for a different area. At the centre of each image are some objects I've collected from the areas. For example, the Elephant & Castle image shows some rocks and debris collected from the air pollution monitoring site.
On the left spread, you see an abstract visualisation of where each powder landed, and how much of it there was out of 100%. Below that there is some information on the objects in the centre and a map showing the location. On the right is the data visualisation image result as well as a QR code you can scan to take you to the video which shows the making of that data visualisation.
These videos show the process I took when throwing the powder over the objects.
